pcThe Computer Grouppc

This group has to be ,by definition, oriented to the computer science side of life. To that end its first priorities when it started were the possession of a laptop,a projector and a screen for its own use. However,it was apparent other groups would also benefit from these and they are regularly used by the Wine Tasting Group and the Military/Naval History Group. In addition, they are used for general meetings.
Our own meetings are held monthly, for two hours, usually at the group Leader's home or somebody else's home. Anyone may attend,no possession of a computer is necessary. Membership is not large but steady, with general U3A  matters dealt with at the opening of a meeting, sometimes followed by a particular subject. Members equipment as well as the use to which it is put varies so a wide range of matters are commonly discussed over the period of a year. Problem solving figures frequently. The laptop, projector & screen are used as appropriate.

Walton Amblers

We amble along the North Downs and local beauty spots stopping to appreciate the local flora and fauna, archeology and local history as well as the views. We meet on the second Thursday of the month for a morning walk of about four to five miles avoiding very steep hills.

Gentle walking - Banstead

These are local walks lasting between an hour and an hour and a half taken at a gentle pace. They are suitable for people who would like to take a little walk in the company of friends, but do not feel they are up to striding along with the other walking groups.

Exploring Art

This group is temporarily suspended following the retirement of the group leader, who led the group for many years.

It would be good to get the group going again. If there is anyone with only a little knowledge who could get us restarted they would be very welcome.

 Music appreciation

Reconstituted after the departure of a long-term, very special leader, this group meets monthly on a Monday afternoon in Banstead in a member's home.  We spend an hour listening to music through the ages, which demonstrates the wide variety of past styles; then after a cup of tea, listen to an hour's programme of favourites selected by a member.  We are currently debating whether to try a programme of pieces we really hate to see if we can work out why.

<>Local History

The group meets once a month, except in summer.

Recent speakers have talked about, "Turnpike roads in Surrey", an historic private home in Purley and "Firemarks" A small project, listing memorials inside the Parish Church has been taken on by some members.war memorial

A visit to a local historic house is also in the programme.

History Group

This group is temporally suspended

Military History

Members include both those interested in reading and hearing about the topic and those who have actual military experience. The group itself has furnished some of its own speakers with topics as diverse as personal experiences of being in combat in Normandy and the Western Desert and of being a POW in Italy and Germany, an exhibition of a member’s collection of weaponry used in the Napoleonic War, the history of the Royal Marines and an analysis of the largest naval battle in history (the Battle of Leyte Gulf where over 250 US and Japanese warships participated).

Sessions from external speakers have included the campaigns of Alexander the Great and the Battle of the Somme as well as personal reminiscences from local residents such as Lt Col Otway who led the assault on the Merville battery during D-Day and Christine Crowley who was a courier for the resistance during the German occupation of Denmark

Future topics include the history of the Royal Artillery, the fall of Singapore and the personal reminiscences of a nurse who was in the siege of Tobruk. The group also occasionally undertakes outings to places or events relevant to our topic.

 Social Studies

This is a lively group in which members choose the future programme. One person presents each session after some reading and research, which involves us all in much discussion - and interruptions! We have been looking at particular aspects of Victorian society for the past year. We now plan to consider social changes during the last 50 years, both materially and in our attitudes and expectations.

 Philosophy

Almost all of the traditional topics in general, moral and political philosophy in the West have been covered over the last fifteen years or so, but we keep returning to them. In addition there are many developments in philosophy and in related fields, which remain to be explored. One topic, which we are currently debating and where there has been a revival of interest is that of practical ethics. Everyone has a view on this.

 Grandparenting

The relationship between grandparent and child is very important to both. Parents today experience stresses of a kind new to us.

Hours of work are long; there may be concerns over schooling, or incompatible emotional pressures towards parental perfection and personal fulfillment.

For us, lucky enough to have grandchildren, our role may be clear: substitute carer; support; stability for a child distressed and puzzled by divorce.

As a group we can discuss the children and their needs in a confidential way, and receive advice, support, and comfort.  We can also boast of their achievements in the same secure setting.  It is good to be able to talk about grandchildren with people who are really interested.
